GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado dropped its match up with Nevada on Monday afternoon, falling 6-1 at Gloria Rodriguez Field.
The Bears were unable to recover from a big third inning by the Wolf Pack, as Nevada used a three-run home run to create early separation and never looked back.
After a scoreless opening frame, Nevada struck first in the second inning before breaking things open in the third. A two-out rally was capped by a three-run shot from Haylee Engelbrecht, giving the Wolf Pack a 4-0 advantage.
Northern Colorado answered in the bottom half of the third inning. KK Christie sparked the offense with a double, and Katie Walling followed with an RBI double to put the Bears on the board and cut the deficit to 4-1.
That would be as close as UNC would get. Nevada added two more runs in the fifth inning, with a triple from Madison Clark and an RBI ground out, extending the lead to 6-1.
The Bears scattered five hits on the afternoon, with Christie, Walling, Amailee Morales, Ella Gonzales and Baylie Kakallis each recording a hit. Northern Colorado threatened in the fourth and fifth innings but left runners on base in both frames.
In the circle, Grace Algrim went the distance for UNC, allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out one.
DUE UP: Northern Colorado returns to Big Sky play this weekend, hosting Weber State at Gloria Rodriguez Field for the final conference series of the regular season. Friday's doubleheader will feature Alumni Day in game one and Bears Supporting Bears in game two, while Saturday, April 25, will serve as Senior Day as the Bears honor their graduating class.
