Bears Set for Sunday Morning Rematch with UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Northern Colorado softball dropped a pair of games Saturday on day two of the Roadrunner Classic at Roadrunner Field, falling 8-6 to UMass Lowell in the morning before being shut out 6-0 by Stephen F. Austin in the afternoon.
GAME 1: UMass Lowell 8, Northern Colorado 6
Northern Colorado came out swinging and plated four runs in the bottom of the first, but UMass Lowell answered with a pair of big innings and held off a late push to secure the win.
KK Christie started the rally by reaching base, and the Bears quickly loaded the bases before Jazzy Longo drove in the first run with an RBI single. Krista Francia followed with a two-run double down the left-field line, and Alina Quinney lifted a sacrifice fly to center to cap the four-run opening frame and give UNC a 4-0 lead.
UMass Lowell responded immediately with three runs in the second, highlighted by Madi Wade's solo home run and a two-run single from Grace Stepp to pull within 4-3. The River Hawks took control in the third, using a triple, an error, and a pair of extra-base hits to score four runs and jump ahead 7-4.
Northern Colorado answered in the fourth to make it a one-run game again. Christie worked a walk and Ella Gonzales singled, setting the stage for Amailee Morales' RBI single to center. Hayden Nelson followed with an RBI single to left-center to bring UNC within 7-6, but the Bears were unable to push across the tying run.
UMass Lowell added an insurance run in the sixth, and DeCitise closed the door in the seventh, striking out three to earn the save. Morales went 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI, while Longo continued her strong weekend with three hits and an RBI. Francia drove in two with her first-inning double, and Nelson finished with two hits and an RBI.
GAME 2: Stephen F. Austin 6, Northern Colorado 0
In the rematch with Stephen F. Austin, Northern Colorado collected seven hits but couldn't break through against Kai Hudson, who went the distance and kept the Bears off the scoreboard.
SFA struck first with a three-run home run in the third inning, then added runs in the fourth and fifth before tacking on another in the fifth to build a six-run cushion. Northern Colorado threatened in a few spots, including a first-inning chance after singles from Amailee Morales and a walk by KK Christie, and again late in the seventh when the Bears put runners on, but Hudson worked out of trouble each time.
Morales, Gonzales, Nelson and Francia all recorded hits for UNC, while Kamana Powell added a pinch-hit single in the seventh.
RECORD WATCH: Amailee Morales ranks 1st all-time in doubles (47), home runs (29), RBIs (124), and walks (92) in program history. She is now 8th in hits (160) with 298 total bases (3rd) and 667 putouts (6th).
She ranks fifth all-time in Big Sky Conference history in doubles, is tied for 10th in home runs, and sits sixth in walks.
Ella Gonzales ranks 11th all-time in RBIs (81), 11th in walks (51) and 11th in home runs (14), and sits 7th in program history in hit by pitch (18).
