SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Northern Colorado closed out the Roadrunner Classic with a 6-4 victory over UTSA on Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
Jazzy Longo opened the game with a double to right-center, and Amailee Morales followed with an RBI double to give UNC a 1-0 lead. UTSA answered with a solo home run in the bottom half, but Northern Colorado responded with its biggest inning of the day in the third.
Longo and Morales again sparked the offense with back-to-back singles, and after a walk loaded the bases, a wild pitch brought in a run to put the Bears back in front. Hayden Nelson then delivered the decisive swing, a three-run home run to center field, stretching the lead to 5-1. Emma Harrington added insurance in the fourth with her first home run of the season, a solo shot to left that made it 6-1.
UTSA chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth and threatened again in the seventh after recording 14 hits in the contest. Ellyse Hydock earned the win, working four innings and allowing three runs while stranding key runners. Aiyana Cordero entered in the fifth and secured the final nine outs to record her first save of the season, limiting further damage and shutting down a late rally.
Morales led the Bears at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while Longo added two hits and scored twice. Nelson finished with three RBIs on her third-inning homer, and Harrington's solo blast provided a crucial cushion as Northern Colorado sealed the 6-4 win.
RECORD WATCH: Amailee Morales ranks 1st all-time in doubles (49), home runs (29), RBIs (125), and walks (92) in program history. She is now 8th in hits (163) with 303 total bases (3rd) and 674 putouts (6th).
She ranks fifth all-time in Big Sky Conference history in doubles, is tied for 10th in home runs, and sits sixth in walks.
