Bears fall 10-3 and 7-5 as Hornets rally late in both contests to take control of the series in Big Sky play.
Game One | Sacramento State 10, Northern Colorado 3
Pitching: (W) Ortiz (5-6); (L) DiNapoli (6-10)
The Hornets capitalized on early momentum and a late surge to hand UNC the loss in game one. Sacramento State plated two runs in the first and never trailed, extending their lead with runs in five of their six innings at the plate.
Northern Colorado cut into the deficit in the third thanks to a sacrifice fly by Katie Walling and an RBI single from Krista Francia. Sabrina Javorsky added an RBI knock in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Hornets' power, highlighted by extra base hits from Lafulafu Malepeai and Andrea Lira.
Francia, Javorsky, Amailee Morales, and Abby Gaona all recorded hits for UNC, while Isabelle DiNapoli (6-10) was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs in the first. Three Bears pitchers combined for six walks and eight hits allowed.
Game Two | Sacramento State 7, Northern Colorado 5
Pitching: (W) Ortiz (6-6); (L) Wilming (5-10)
In game two, Northern Colorado jumped out early with two first-inning runs on a sacrifice fly from Francia and an RBI groundout by Nya Chacon. Sacramento State responded immediately, tying things up in the bottom half of the inning and eventually pulling ahead with a pair of runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
The Bears made a late push in the sixth, scoring three times to briefly tie the game at 5-5. Kenzie Carter delivered a 2 RBI single, and Katie Walling followed with an RBI base hit to pull ahead. The Hornets once again answered, reclaiming the lead in the bottom of the frame with a three run shot to center field.
Walling led the Bears at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Walling, Javorsky, Morales, and Longo also added hits. Anna Wilming (5-10) took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) in six innings of work.
