Northern Colorado battles through strong performance despite third-inning rally from Hornets
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Northern Colorado dropped its series finale to Sacramento State, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium, despite a solo home run from senior first baseman Amailee Morales in the fifth inning.
In a game defined by early miscues and Sacramento State capitalizing on defensive errors, Northern Colorado was limited to just two hits while the Hornets put together a five-run third inning, aided by a pair of UNC errors and timely contact hitting.
Morales recorded her 12th home run of the season with a solo shot to right center in the fifth, providing the Bears their lone run of the game. Catcher Sabrina Javorsky accounted for the other hit, a single in the second inning.
Sacramento State needed just three hits to plate five runs, taking advantage of fielding mistakes and stringing together sacrifice flies and a two-RBI single from Malissa George to break the game open.
Grace Algrim (0-5) took the loss after allowing five runs—just one earned—on three hits across three innings of work. Anna Wilming entered in relief and was strong, retiring all nine batters she faced over three scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Danyelle Leone (3-1) picked up the win for Sacramento State after holding the Bears to one run on two hits across 5.1 innings of relief.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 12-27 overall and 3-6 in Big Sky play.
