Bears Defeat New Mexico in Series Opener

The Bears defeated the Lobos 16-15 in the series opener, banging out 20 hits, including six doubles.
Kai Wagner, Tony Castonguay, Jake King, Jake Bullard, and Brandon Sanchez tallied three hits each, while Anthony Stellato recorded a pair of knocks.
Castonguay and Bullard drove in four runs each, while Wagner and Craig Kenney added two RBIs each.
In a back-and-forth battle, UNC jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the opening frame. The teams traded five run innings in the bottom of the first and the top of the second, knocking both starters out of the game.
Carter Monda reached on an error and extended the Bears advantage out to 8-5 when he scampered home on a wild pitch in the third. New Mexico evened the contest with three runs in the bottom half of the frame.
In the fifth, UNC hung eight runs on nine hits, opening a 16-8 advantage. With one out, the Bears registered a walk and nine straight base knocks. The Lobos bullpen shut UNC's offense down, retiring 14 of the final 15 batters.
New Mexico clawed back with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, trimming the margin to 16-13. Jack Tuttle allowed three hits and two runs in the ninth but with the winning run on first, he induced a fly ball that King ran down in left center, securing the victory and Tuttle's second save of the season.
Mason Bright earned the victory, his first of 2025.
The teams continue the series with a doubleheader Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for noon. The nightcap is slated to start 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
