UNC’s offense drove in eight two-out RBIs across both games, a key factor in their game one victory
Game 1: Bears 9, Trailblazers 8
Northern Colorado struck early and held off a late push from Utah Tech to secure a thrilling 9-8 win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Bears exploded for five runs in the first inning, capitalizing on timely hitting and free passes. They added four more runs in the sixth to extend their lead, highlighted by a clutch two-run single from Tony Castonguay and a three-hit performance from Jake King, who also drove in two runs.
Kai Wagner showed patience at the plate, drawing two walks and scoring twice, while AJ Carter reached base three times and scored a pair of runs.
Hunter Gibson picked up the win out of relief, striking out two in 2.0 innings of work. Jack Tuttle came on in relief and earned the save, working through the ninth to shut the door on Utah Tech's rally with three strikeouts.
Game 2: Trailblazers 5, Bears 4
Utah Tech bounced back in game two, edging Northern Colorado 5-4 in a tightly contested battle.
The Bears took an early lead with a run in the first and added two more in the fifth, but Utah Tech responded with a run in the seventh and two in the sixth to swing the momentum. UNC held the lead in the seventh, only for the Trailblazers to scratch across the winning runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Northern Colorado's offense was led by Kai Wagner, who delivered a key two-run double, while Dalton Miller added a hit and scored once. Brandon Sanchez reached base twice and scored a run.
On the mound, Dylan Smith started and went five innings with six strikeouts, giving up two runs before turning it over to the bullpen. Luke Guest took the loss despite a solid relief effort, striking out one over 1.2 innings.
