UNC Suffers Setback at Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Northern Colorado dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Tarleton State at Tarleton Baseball Complex Saturday.
After falling 8-4 in the opener, the Bears (0-6) fell in 12 innings for the second time this season.
In the opener, UNC trailed 2-0 after the first inning. Neither side pushed across a run until the Bears plated solo markers in each of the final four innings. The Texans responded with multiple tallies in the fourth and fifth before adding one in the sixth.
The Bears capitalized on a fourth out in the fourth frame. With one out, Caden Wagner struck out but reached on a throwing error. Garrett Fisher delivered a two-out double to right center and plating Wagner.
After allowing a pair of runs in the home fourth, UNC closed the gap to 4-2, when Jake King's sacrifice fly scored Carter Monda, who led off the inning with a single.
Trailing 7-2 in the sixth, Brandon Sanchez doubled to left center, chasing Fisher – who reached on a hit-by-pitch – home for the Bears' third run of the contest.
Zain Zinicola delivered a pinch-hit knock to lead off the seventh. He moved to second on a single to left and came home on a third-straight hit, the last off the bat of Jake King.
In the nightcap, UNC jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two and a half innings. Tarleton State evened the score with two runs in the third and fourth, before adding one in the fifth and three in the sixth. The Bears suffered the setback with a two-run home run for the home side in the 12th inning.
King doubled to left center to open the contest. Carson Gross walked and Kai Wagner loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch. Caden Wagner pushed the Bears in front for the first time in the series with a double down the right-field line, plating two. Kai escaped a run down and crossed the plate in front of his older brother on a miscue by the Texans' defense. Zinicola, who reached on the fielder's choice netted the fifth run when he scampered home on a wild pitch.
Gross tripled to lead off the second and scored when Kai Wagner singled off the pitcher. Wagner moved to third on Caden's second double in as many at-bats and made the score 7-0 when Sanchez delivered an RBI groundout.
Singles by Jackson Romero and Gross placed runners on the corners with two outs in the third. Romero tallied the eighth run when Kai Wagner lined a single into center field.
