LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Northern Colorado softball team earned its first win of the season, defeating Stonehill College, 7-0, in their second game of the day at the La Jolla Invitational on Saturday. The Bears lost their first game of the day, an 8-0 loss to Utah.
The Bears hit nearly .300 as a team against the Skyhawks, going 10-for-34 at the bat. Alexsi Barashkoff started things off for the Bears with a single in the first inning that scored both Paola Villegas and Alyssa Wenzel. In the third inning the Bears put up two more runs, one off a triple from Carson Fischer and another due to an error by Stonehill that scored Fischer from third.
In the sixth inning, Libby Hawks scored due to a fourth a final error by the Skyhawks. Jayden Gandert doubled later in the inning to score Nya Chacon and Abby Gaona for the Bears' final runs of the game.
Erin Caviness pitched the complete game, striking out a career-high 16 batters, while only conceding two hits. Her 16 strikeouts also ties the program record for most in a game.
In the first game of the day, the Bears took to the diamond in a rematch against the Utah Utes. Unfortunately, the Utes kept the Bears from scoring and completed the 8-0 win in six innings.
Lauren Starthearn and Chacon both recorded hits for the Bears against Utah. Grace Algrim earned her first career start in the circle, pitching 1.1 innings before Isabelle DiNapoli came in to pitch the final 4.1 innings.
ACCORDING TO COACH PENDLETON-HELM
"It was a good day for Bears softball. It was exciting to get our first win on the books and to see Erin tie the UNC record for strikeouts. I feel like today we got to see this team shake off their nerves and start putting together all of the pieces. I'm so proud to see this team show us what they have been preparing for since fall. I love seeing their fight and know it is going to serve them well this season."
