MISSOULA, Mont. – Northern Colorado women's cross country registered a finished seventh, while the men placed eighth at the 2023 Big Sky Conference Cross Country Championships – hosted by Montana – on the course at Montana Golf Course Friday.
"Our goal coming in for the men was top seven and a top-five finish for the women," UNC director of track and field and cross-country Wanye Angel said. "We are a little disappointed because it was right there within our grasp. We got out great and closed well but struggled in the middle and lost our momentum. Unfortunately, we could not make up the deficit."
Chloe Rylance paced the women in the 5000-meter race, crossing the line in 17 minutes and 58 seconds and placing 16th.
"I was very pleased with Chloe and Jesse," Angel said. "They raced very well today. Coach Stormie Sickler and I are immensely proud of them."
UNC registered the second-highest finish and fourth-lowest point total in the program's DI era at the Big Sky Championship. The Bears equaled last season's seventh-place finish and lowered the 2022 tally by eight points, totaling 194.
The 2012 squad claimed fifth at the conference race, with 169 points. In 2013, UNC recorded an eighth-place finish, with 189 points and the 2007 team registered 192 in ninth.
In men's action, Jesse Hayward concluded the 8000-meter event in a time of 25 minutes and 30 seconds.
He helped the Bears to their third-highest team result at the DI level. They recorded their highest spot in the Big Sky Championship since the 2019 season, when UNC earned a fifth-place finish, with 148 points – school records in each category.
