UNC Falls to James Madison on the Road

HARRISONBURG, Va.- Northern Colorado Soccer's undefeated mark on the 2022 season came to an end on Thursday night in a 2-1 loss to James Madison on the road.
The first 45 minutes of regulation were largely in James Madison's favor, with the Dukes overpowering the Bears at midfield and keeping goalkeeper Kaya Lindberg on her toes with plenty of action in the box. Lindberg recorded a total of three saves on nine shots, before giving up a goal off the post at the 26-minute mark.
UNC spent the majority of the half on their own end of the pitch with JMU inhibiting their offense. This pressure kept the Bears from recording a single shot in the first half and put them at a 1-0 deficit at halftime.
However, the second half saw a much stronger showing from Northern Colorado. Following halftime, the Bears remained diligent and came up with some strong scoring chances, outshooting the Dukes 5-4 and earning two corners.
One of these chances to get the Bears on the board came in the form of a free kick by Mckenna Wilson, who was unable to capitalize on the foul and get the ball past the JMU goalie.
Despite the team's best efforts to overcome James Madison and an additional three saves from Lindberg, the Dukes were able to score once again late in the second half to lead 2-0.
Not giving up until the clock hit zero, Melina Faris scored on an assist from Britney Donais with just seven seconds remaining in regulation to get her team on the score sheet and prevent JMU from earning a shutout, ending the match 2-1. Faris has now scored in back-to-back games.
What They Said
"It was a good test for the Bears on the road. They're a good and talented team who just tied Louisville, who are another big team, and gave us some challenges," said Head Coach Tim Barrera. "We kept battling and figured things out and got better in the second half. From a statistical standpoint, we played it pretty even in the second, so a much better second half. We just need to get out and play better from the start on the road. We knew they were going to be a tough battle, but now we'll re-group and get ready for the ACC team, Virginia Tech."
Game Notes
· UNC recorded 5 shots on the day from Britney Donais, Mckenna Wilson, Melina Faris, and Lauren Woodhull. Three of these were on goal.
· Melina Faris led the team with two shots.
· Kaya Lindberg tabbed six saves in the match.
· Lindberg and Lucy Hart led the team in minutes played with 90 and 80, respectively.
