9/7/2022 9:35:00 AM | Women's Soccer
GREELEY, Colo.- UNC Soccer will hit the road following a successful two-week home stand as they take on James Madison and Virginia Tech on Thursday and Sunday, respectively.
Â
This marks the first big road trip of the season for the Bears as they will remain away for three consecutive games, where they hope to defend their undefeated record on the season so far.
Â
Scouting the Dukes
James Madison prepares to take on the Bears with a 3-1-2 record on the 2022 season so far. Their two most recent games include a 2-0 loss against ACC team, #5 Virginia and a scoreless draw against Louisville. The team's winning record on the season includes victories over Morehead State, Charlotte, and La Salle.
Â
Head Coach Joshua Walters enters his fifth year at the helm of the team. A notable player on Walters' squad comes in redshirt junior defender Brittany Munson. Munson has earned back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week Awards. Her defensive efforts helped the Dukes claim four consecutive shutouts before the team fell to Virginia. Amanda Attanasi is also a player to watch for the Dukes, leading the team with three goals and two assists on the season. Goalkeeper Alexandra Blom has also been a strong presence for James Madison in goal, recording three shutouts so far this season.
Â
History Against James Madison
Northern Colorado and James Madison will meet for the first time in program histories come Thursday in Harrisonburg. In their first ever competition, the Bears will aim to add a winning record against yet another team to their repertoire.
Â
Scouting the Hokies
Head Coach Charles "Chugger" Adair and his Virginia Tech Hokies will mark the second power five team the Bears will take on this season. The ACC team enters the match with an overall record of 5-0-1 in the 2022 season. However, they will face South Carolina on Thursday before taking on the Bears on Sunday. The undefeated Hokies will enter into their Thursday match with a four-game winning streak thanks to victories over Delaware, Elon, Old Dominion, and Charlotte.
Â
The Hokies' roster includes multiple players to watch in the matchup. One of these is Tori Powell, who leads the team with five goals scored on the season, two of which came in the Hokies' most recent win against Charlotte. Goalkeeper Lauren Hargrove is also a notable player for Virginia Tech, recording three shutouts already in 2022. Other leading scorers for Virginia Tech include Taylor Price, Gabby Johnson, and Sophie Maltese.
Â
History Against Virginia Tech
The Bears and the Hokies have never competed against one another in program histories. Sunday's match will mark the first ever matchup between the two teams, and the first time Head Coach Tim Barrera will take on his alma mater at the helm of UNC. This gives UNC the chance to prove themselves in their first game against the ACC opponent.
Thursday's game against James Madison is set for 5 p.m. MT, while Sunday's match with Virginia Tech will begin at 11 a.m. MT.
