UNC volleyball defeated Denver 3-1
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado volleyball had its first taste of game action Saturday night defeating Denver in an exhibition match 3-1. The veteran team showed resilience throughout to pick up the win. The Bears battled back and forth with the Pioneers in the first and third set combining for 21 ties and nine lead changes while coming back from a large deficit in the second to take a 2-0 lead to the break.
Syd Cole showed a steady hand for the team distributing the ball well to the plethora of weapons the Bears have, finishing with a match-high 33 assists. While only showing just two service aces on the stat sheet, her tough serving was pivotal throughout the match. Cole led a key stretch in the second set producing five straight UNC points as she toed the service line.
A pair of Bears finished the night with double-figure kills in Kailey Jo Ince and Makenzie Harris. Ince recorded a double-double on the night with 13 kills and 12 digs. Harris added in 10 kills.
Michaela Boon led Northern Colorado with 16 digs in the match.
Coach Oates' Thoughts
"We got out of (this match) exactly what we wanted to in an exhibition. We wanted to see some different players. We were exploited on some weaknesses that we can add to our list of things to work on, but overall, I think we played like a veteran team. We didn't play great, but we responded to each time we made a mistake. We never let one thing beat us throughout the match."
