GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado Volleyball (9-13, 6-3 Big Sky) went head-to-head with in-state opponent No. 23 Colorado (19-3, 9-1 Big 12) in a thrilling five-set match at Bank of Colorado Arena but ultimately came up short in a competitive battle.
The Bears came out strong, showing toughness and energy to take the opening set 25-22. The second set was a back-and-forth contest, with both teams trading points before the Buffaloes edged out a 28-26 win. Colorado carried that momentum into the third set, taking control for a 25-15 victory.
Refusing to back down, Northern Colorado responded with a determined performance in the fourth set, earning a 25-21 win to force a decisive fifth. Despite the fight, the Bears couldn't complete the upset, falling 15-8 in the final frame.
Offensively, Northern Colorado had five players record double-digit kills. Bella Van Lannen and Alayna Tessena led the way with 13 kills apiece, followed by Isabel Bennett with 11, and Zoe Gibbs and Brynn Reines each adding 10.
Setter Nerea Alvarez Jorge turned in another standout performance, posting 43 assists and a match-high 18 digs for her latest double-double of the season.
Despite the tough loss, the Bears showcased resilience and grit against a nationally ranked opponent.
Northern Colorado now shifts its focus back to Big Sky play, preparing to host Montana State and Montana in a pair of crucial conference match ups at the Bank of Colorado Arena.
