UNC Wrangles the Gauchos in Season Opener

GREELEY, Colo. – In a match-up of top-flight teams from their respective conferences, Northern Colorado University topped UC Santa Barbara 3-1 (25-17, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23) on opening night of the volleyball season on Thursday night.
After cruising in the opening set, Northern Colorado started to meet turbulence late in the second where they held on for a two-point win. Eyeing a sweep, the Bears held a 23-22 advantage in the third before a late UCSB rally.
Down by as many as six points (9-3) in the fourth set, the Bears shook off the late-charging Gauchos with an inspired run and eventually knotted the set at 21-21 via a combo block thanks to Syd Cole and Isabel Bennett.
Moments later, a setting error charged to UCSB granted the Bears their first lead at 24-23 leading to Kailey Jo Ince icing the match with an ace.

The Bears will face a quick turnaround by welcoming the University of North Carolina to Bank of Colorado Arena on Saturday, Aug. 27. Opening serve between the two 'UNC' schools is set for 6 p.m.
