Baseball drops series opener with Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. – Six different Bears recorded a hit on Saturday but it wasn't enough to keep pace with Western Illinois as the Leathernecks earned the win, 7-1, to begin the three-game series.
WIU went right down to business in the opening innings. Scratching across a run in the first and two in the second had Northern Colorado playing from behind.
While UNC did their best to claw back into the contest, the home side broke open the game in the fourth. Four runs made it a 7-0 advantage for the Leathernecks.
It was Owen Lockner who took over for the starter Iain Isdale. Lockner best outing of the year came against the WIU over a month ago when the Leathernecks visited Greeley. Saturday, the sophomore managed to perform even better.
Throwing a career-best 5.0 innings, Lockner also equaled his career-high in strikeouts with four.
Josh Glenn forced the issue in the top of the sixth inning. Reaching on an error, the mistake allowed Jake King to cross home plate to put UNC on the board.
The lone run would be all Northern Colorado could muster, however, as Western Illinois took the opening game of the series, 7-1.
