Leading Off
Across its 18 Summit League games, no offense has been better than Northern Colorado. The Bears lead the conference in batting average (.308), slugging (.451), triples (6), on-base percentage (.386) and hits (161).
Individually, it's been the stellar play of Cameron Cromer leading the charge. Cromer's .442 average across his 15 league games is first by almost .060.
Nobody has stacked up the hits quite like Shaydon Kubo in 2022. Kubo boasts 16 multi-hit games on the year, including four three-hit games and one four-hit effort.
Already with a nine-game hit streak on the season, Hayden Heinze is back on the prowl again. Heinze has a six-hit streak entering Macomb this weekend.
Last Time Out
Shaydon Kubo continued his hot streak at the dish, Caden Wagner logged another pair of doubles and Lincoln Turn went yard on Senior Day but it wasn't enough to grab a victory against a formidable Oral Roberts squad.
Scouting the Leathernecks
Since leaving Greeley winless, Western Illinois has picked up wins against North Dakota State, South Dakota State and St. Thomas. However, Andy Pascoe's squad has dropped 13 of its last 15 contests.
The Leathernecks have been led by standout freshman Nick Mitchell. Batting a robust .338, Mitchell ranks fourth overall in the Summit League.
Mitchell also sparks an aggressive base running WIU squad. His 21 stolen bases on the season rank No. 1 in the conference and No. 31 in the country. As a team, Western Illinois has stolen the 19th most bases in the nation.
History against Western Illinois
The Leathernecks and Bears met for the first time back in March. In a thrilling three-game series, UNC walked away with the sweep, carding two epic walk-offs in the process. This weekend marks Northern Colorado's first trip to Macomb.
Looking Ahead
UNC stays on the road with one final Summit League series on the books against North Dakota State. The Bears will be clawing for the fourth and final spot in the 2022 Summit League Tournament.
