MACOMB, Ill. – Mother's Day was twice as nice for Northern Colorado Baseball as they picked up a pair of wins in the get-away-day doubleheader. UNC defeated Western Illinois by the scores of 11-10 and 7-4 to win the series.
The Bears' offense started strong in both games, scoring seven runs in the first two innings of game one and three in the first inning of game two. Over the two games, UNC combined for 23 hits.
The duo of Shaydon Kubo and Craig Kenny led the way for Northern Colorado at the plate all day long. Kubo went 5-for-8 in the twin-bill scoring five times and driving home five runs while walking twice. Kenny was 4-for-9 on the day with two runs scored and six RBIs. Each had a double and home run.
Both home runs came in the first game, Kenny's a three-run shot in the first inning and Kubo's a grand slam in the second. Up 7-0 early the Bears held on after a late charge by WIU.
Logan Chase steadied the ship late by pitching the final 3.2 innings allowing no runs or hits while striking out five on his way to his third save of the year.
Kenny was again a part of UNC's three-run first in the second game. He drove home Kubo with a double and then scored himself on the two-run home run from Caden Wagner.
Jayden Metz controlled the mound for Northern Colorado in game two. The senior pitched 8.1 innings allowing four runs, three earned while striking out nine for his first win of the year.

Northern Colorado concludes Summit League play next weekend when they travel to Fargo, North Dakota. The Bears take on North Dakota State for a three-game series from Friday-Sunday.
