2/27/2022 2:16:00 PM | Softball
UNC softball scored 17 runs and recorded 23 hits in the two games
Northern Colorado's bats combined for 23 hits over the two games for a batting average of .516 on the day.
Transfer Kaleigh Holland led the team going 5-for-19 at the plate scoring once while driving home five runs. Her bases-clearing double in the game against Lamar was the difference in the game. It was her lone extra base hit of the game.
UNC had to come back to earn the win over Lamar scoring four in the top of the fourth. Jaycie Gandert and Holland led the inning off with a double and single, respectively. Then freshman Jenna Kobernik smoked a ball over the fence in left to take a 3-2 lead.
Following a groundout, Alexsi Barashkoff hit a second home run of the inning this one to right field.
Lamar tied the game in the bottom of the sixth to force extras. The Cardinals tried to come back themselves after Holland's bases-clearing double in the top of the eighth, scoring one but it was not enough.
The opening game was a whirlwind. A day after being one-hit by the Bears, Corpus Christi scored seven runs in the first inning.
Northern Colorado responded with five runs in the second having the first four batters reach safely. Jaycie Gandert had the team's lone extra base hit of the inning with a double that scored a run. Overall, UNC scored five runs on five hits.
Trailing 10-7 entering the seventh UNC put pressure on the Islanders. The first two hitters reached base safely to place a pair in scoring position. Riley Plogger brought home the first run with her single down the left field line.
A double steal brought home the second run, but the game-tying run ended up stranded in scoring position.

What's Ahead
Northern Colorado fans will not have to wait as long as thought for the home opener. A change to the schedule means the Bears will open the 2022 home schedule under the lights on Thursday, March 3 for a doubleheader against Utah Valley starting at 4 pm. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 8. UNC will then host the Fairfield Inn & Suites UNC Classic at Gloria Rodriguez Field Friday-Sunday.
