Bears power past Montana for doubleheader sweep

UNC combined for 19 hits in the two games
GREELEY, Colo. – For the second weekend in a row Northern Colorado softball swept the Friday doubleheader. This time against Montana. The Bears beat the Griz 9-1 and 7-4 to secure the series win.
Alyssa Wenzel and Mady Young combined to go 9-14 in the doubleheader scoring six times and driving in six runs as well.
UNC also received a pair of complete games from Lainey Henehan and Erin Caviness.
Game 1 Recap
The Bears wasted no time getting on the board with a run in the board in the bottom of the first. Alyssa Wenzel's seeing eye single through the left side scored Mady Young to put UNC up 1-0.
The lead grew to 5-0 in the third when the Bears scored four runs on four hits. Back-to-back well hit balls scored three of the four runs in the inning. Last week's Big Sky Player, Dani Young, ripped a ball to the wall in right for her second triple of the year scoring her fellow Young, Mady.
Wenzel then sent a ball over the left center wall to make it 4-0. Northern Colorado loaded the bases following the home run and Anna Martinez came home on a Natalie Joyner sacrifice fly.
The Bears ended the game early with another four-run inning in the bottom of the fifth. UNC loaded the bases again to start it. Joyner singled to left scoring a pair. Mady Young ended the game with a triple to the wall in right giving UNC the 9-1 win.
Game 2 Recap
Northern Colorado struck first in the second game as Alison Steinker hit a frozen rope to the gap in left center scoring a pair in the bottom of the second. Steinker came home to score to cap off the inning on Natalie Joyner's single.
Fresh off a three RBI game to start the day, Alyssa Wenzel drove home her fourth run of the day with a single in the bottom of the third. She later scored on a Steinker double to left.
Montana cut the lead to 5-2 in the fourth with a solo home run and walk with the bases loaded.
Dani Young continued her hot streak with a two-RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.
Montana scored a pair in the sixth but was sent down in order in the seventh as UNC completed the doubleheader sweep 7-4.
Game Notes
- Lainey Hanehan earned her second win of the year going the five full allowing just one run on six hits.
- Erin Caviness pitched her eighth complete game of the year earning the win allowing four runs, just one earned on eight hits.
- Mady Young went 5-7 on the day with three runs scored and two RBI and a walk.
- Alyssa Wenzel was 4-7 in the doubleheader with four RBI and three runs scored.
- Reigning Big Sky Player of the Week Dani Young was 3-6 with three RBI and two runs scored
- Head coach Ben Garcia earned the 200th win of his career.
