Mady Young stays hot, Bears fall to Wildcats

UNC softball dropped its doubleheader on Friday 10-2 and 9-3.
OGDEN, Utah – Northern Colorado softball entered the weekend winners of five of their last six and fresh off a sweep of Montana last week. Unfortunately for UNC that roll was slowed down by preseason Big Sky favorite Weber State. The Wildcats won both games of Friday's doubleheader 10-2 and 9-3.
Reigning Big Sky Player of the Week Mady Young extended her hit streak to five games on the day going 2-3 in game one and 1-4 in game two. Young got the scoring going for the Bears in game one with a two-run home run in the third inning. Her fourth of the year.
Freshman Alison Steinker was the other Bear to have a multi-hit game going 2-2 in game two. Both hits singles.
After scoring 10 unanswered in game one, WSU scored two runs in the first inning of game two and went up 7-0 before the Bears pushed across three in the fourth.
It was a comedy of errors in the fourth as Weber State committed five errors in the inning. UNC loaded the bases on three errors including two by their pitcher. Usually found in the circle, Maggie Thurston played left field on Friday and drove home a run in game two.
She reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded and saw another run cross the plate on WSU's fourth error of the inning. Thurston later scored when Jayden Mercado was caught in a pickle but stayed in it long enough to let the third run of the game score.
Thurston finished the day 0-5 with an RBI and run scored.
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado and Weber State close out their series on Saturday at noon.
