Softball opens Big Sky play at Sacramento State

UNC softball heads to Sacramento State for a three-game series
Northern Colorado returns to conference play this weekend for the first time since 2019 when they face Sacramento State.
Leading Off
• Northern Colorado's went 2-3 on the weekend in Omaha, ending it on a high note with back-to-back wins over the host Mavericks.
• This weekend's series is the conference opener for both teams.
• The games can be seen on Pluto TV channel 1052.
• UNC will play an 18-game Big Sky schedule with an even split of three home series and three road series. The Bears will host Portland State, Montana and Southern Utah while traveling to Sacramento State, Weber State and Idaho State.
• Erin Caviness closed the weekend with a pair of complete game wins. She allowed just three runs on 11 hits and one walk in the two games while striking out seven.
• Mady Young enjoyed her time in Omaha leaving with a four-game hit streak and reached base safely all five games. She hit .429 for the weekend with three doubles and a home run.Â
• Freshman Alison Steinker is starting to settle into college ball. She is tied for the team lead with four multi-hit games with Mady Young and Paola Villegas.
• Carson Fischer continues to lead the team in runs batted in with 10 on the season. She has a team-leading three multi-RBI games.Â
• Sacramento State enters this weekend at 6-15 with all six wins coming at home.Â
• The Hornets have not played a game since March 14.Â
• Northern Colorado aims to end a five-game losing streak to the Hornets. Sacramento State leads the all-time series 22-3, with an 8-1 record in Sacramento.
Scouting Sacramento State
Sacramento State enters the weekend at 6-15 overall, but all six wins have come at home. Pitcher Marissa Bertuccio has been on fire to start the year winning the Big Sky Pitcher of the Week award three times. She is 5-7 with a 3.36 ERA and 40 strikeouts.Â
The Hornets are hoping the warm weather wakes up their bats that have hit .176 on the year. A pair of injuries have hurt them in Shea Graves and Katie Vretzos.Â
Only third baseman Lewa Day has played in all 21 games for the team hitting .255 with a team leading eight RBI and three home runs.Â
