UNC softball fell to Dixie State in eight, 5-4
ST. GEORGE, Utah – Northern Colorado softball finished up its weekend at the Dixie State Tournament on Sunday, once again going into extra innings. The Bears fell to the host Trailblazers 5-4 in eight innings.
A day after scoring 14 runs against DSU, Northern Colorado wasted no time getting on the board with a two-run double by Carson Fischer to score Emma Brockmann and Paola Villegas.
The lead stayed at 2-0 until the top of the third when Dixie State tied it up. UNC didn't let that last long as Jayden Mercado showed off her speed on the base paths with a lead-off double and scored on the play on an error by DSU's left fielder.
Host Dixie State once again tied the game in the fifth inning leading the game into extras. DSU proceed to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the eighth with a two-run home run.
Northern Colorado cut the deficit to one with a Brockmann RBI single in the bottom half of the inning and had the tying run 60 feet away before an eight-pitch battled ended in a fly out to end the game.
Game Notes
- Jayden Mercado had her most productive game of the season so far, scoring two runs and going 1-for-4 at the plate.
- Carson Fischer turned in her second multi-RBI game of the year driving in two on Sunday.
- Maggie Thurston and Erin Caviness combined to strikeout 13 Trailblazers over the two games against Dixie State this weekend.
