Mady Young hit for the cycle in UNC's 15-14 loss against Dixie State
Northern Colorado exploded for a 12-run inning against host Dixie State in game two of the day, but it wasn't enough as the Bears fell 15-14 in eight innings.
The Bears' big inning came in third when they batted around before an out was recorded.
UNC got on the board with an RBI double from Alyssa Wenzel. She scored the second run of the game when Mady Young reached on an error by DSU.
The bases became full of Bears and another run scored with three straight walks.
Haley Boxwell and Bridgette Strobl recorded back-to-back hits to put UNC in the lead at 6-5. The big inning was extended by another Trailblazers' error leading to three straight extra base hits.
Wenzel recorded her second hit of the inning with a triple to score another run to make it a 9-5 ball game. The inning was capped off with back-to-back home runs from Mady Young and Paola Villegas.
Dixie State diligently chipped away at the UNC lead, cutting it to 12-9 before the Bears scored again. The trio of Wenzel, Young and Villegas once again did the damage for Northern Colorado.
Wenzel started the two-out rally with a single followed up by a Young double and Villegas triple to push two runs across. The double completed the cycle for Young.
DSU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and the two teams headed to extras.
A single following a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the eighth ended the wild ride of a ball game.
Northern Colorado dropped its first game of the day to Utah State, 8-0 in five innings.
Game Notes
- Mady Young and Alyssa Wenzel each had four-hit games. Young hit for the cycle, while Wenzel had two doubles and a triple.
- The trio of Young, Wenzel and Villegas drove in seven of the team's run and scored eight of them.
- Paola Villegas and Haley Boxwell each had a multi-hit game with two.
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado looks to end the weekend on a high note when they face Dixie State once again Sunday at 11 am.
