Softball heads to Utah for Dixie State Tournament

UNC softball faces Dixie State, Utah State and Weber State this weekend
GREELEY, Colo. – On the road again, UNC softball is on the road again. This weekend Northern Colorado softball heads south once again this time to St. George, Utah. The Bears will face Dixie State, Utah State and Weber State in the Dixie State Tournament.
Leading Off
• Northern Colorado split its opening weekend in El Paso, Texas winning the middle two games of the four-game series against UTEP.
• Katie Simonsgaard led the team with a .571 batting average playing in three of the four games. She had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs.
• Nebraska transfer Carson Fischer made an instant impact for the Bears with a .308 average driving in a team-leading four runs and scoring three times herself.
• Maggie Thurston played a key role in both of UNC's wins as she ended up 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA for the weekend. She allowed just two runs and struck out five.
• UNC will face Dixie State for the first time in program history this weekend, while the Bears haven't played against Utah State or Weber State since 2019.
• The game against Weber State does not count in the Big Sky standings.
Scouting Dixie State
Host Dixie State is 1-9 on the year but was just a few outs away from defeating No. 2 Washington to open the season.
The 1-2 punch of Kasey Crawford and Megan Anders lead the Trailblazers at the plate hitting .318 and .310, respectively. Anders is tied for the team lead with five RBI.
DSU has struggled in the circle with a team ERA of 7.58.
Scouting Utah State
Utah State is returning to St. George again this week after playing in the Dixie State Classic last weekend. The Aggies went 2-3 on the weekend with a win over Montana and a walk-off win over the host DSU. USU is 2-7 on the season.
Gabriella Jimenez is the Aggies slugger with a .345 average, scoring nine times, driving in another 10 and five home runs.
Utah State has a team ERA of 6.23.
Scouting Weber State
Once again this year Weber State is the favorite to win the Big Sky in 2021. Entering this weekend they are 4-6 on the year.
Catcher Lauren Hoe earned the Big Sky Player of the Week honor last week for her performance at the UNLV Desert Classic. She hit .400 with a 1.438 OPS with three home runs and seven RBI. On the year she is hitting .321 leading the team in RBI and home runs.
Mariah Ramirez leads the WSU arms with a 3-3 record and 3.51 ERA. She has pitched 25.2 innings allowing 15 runs, 10 earned and striking out 17.
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado comes home for the first time in 2021 to host the UNC/CSU Tournament. The Bears and Rams will welcome South Dakota State and Oregon State to the Northern Colorado region for the weekend. Friday and Sunday's action will take place at Gloria Rodriguez Field. Saturday's games will be in Fort Collins.
