ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It was a thrilling game one in the Land of Enchantment as the UNC Bears baseball team met with the New Mexico Lobos for the first game of the three-game weekend series. New Mexico narrowly avoided the Bears comeback and took the game 7-6.
It was a pitching duel to begin the game, with both teams scoreless through the first three innings. Only four hits were allowed in the three innings, two each from Issac Bracken of the Bears and Aaron Makil of UNM. Bracken went for 5.1 innings and threw 83 pitches.
Things changed quickly in the top of the fourth inning, with Josh Glenn singling to right center and Matt Burkart hitting a double to advance Glenn to third. Billy Moreland took advantage of the runners on base and singled to right center to bring them both home and take the 2-0 lead for UNC. The Lobos were able to add a pair of their own runs in the fourth to tie things up at 2-2.
UNC gained the lead again in the top of the fifth inning when Shaydon Kubo doubled down the right field line and was brought in by Sam Leach, who singled through the left field side with two outs to make it 3-2 Bears. Once again, New Mexico answered by scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning to take their first lead of the day 5-3 heading into the sixth inning.
After scoreless sixth and seventh innings, Sam Wyatt continued to try and hold off the Lobos offense, striking out his third and fourth batters in the bottom of the eighth. However, the Lobos were able to score two more runs to increase the lead 7-3.
Needing five runs to take the lead, Hayden Heinze advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Jake Gitter doubled to right center, allowing Heinze to make it all the way home and narrow the lead to 7-4. Sam Leach rode the momentum and followed it up with a triple to right field, bringing home Jake Gitter making it just a two run lead for the Lobos.
Sam Leach added one more on a wild pitch to bring the Bears within one with two outs. New Mexico was able to escape from the Bears comeback, ending the scoring there for UNC.
Game two on Saturday versus the Lobos will be played at the same time as today, 3 PM. Game three on Sunday will be a Sunday morning matchup, with that game starting at 10 AM.
