ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Due to rain, UNC baseball got the Saturday off and played a double-header with the New Mexico Lobos on Sunday. In the first game of the day, Northern Colorado and New Mexico battled in an extremely tight matchup, with New Mexico clinching the win at the very end, 3-2. The Lobos completed the defense of Santa Ana Star Field in the final game of the weekend with the 9-0 win over UNC.
The Lobos were lucky to escape with wins in games one and two against the Bears. UNC lost the first two games by a combined two runs, 7-6 on Friday and 3-2 in game one of Sunday . The Bears showed no signs of quitting in both games, making the Lobos compete until the final pitch.
Game 1
Sam Colehower got the start for the Bears in game one of the day, throwing 65 pitches in 3.1 innings and allowing two hits and two runs. Paul Falco stepped in for Colehower in the bottom of the fourth and got the final two outs of the inning.
The Lobos gained the early lead in the bottom of the first when they put one run on the board, and added a second run the next inning to make it 2-0 Lobos. Matt Burkart got the first hit for the Bears in the third inning with his single to shortstop.
The 2-0 score would hold from the third through the fifth innings, thanks to Justin Armbruster holding the Bears to only one hit from the mound for UNM. But things changed in the sixth, when Quinn Ayers reached first on a fielding error, and Hayden Heinze followed that up with a single, the second hit of the game for UNC. However, Armbruster was able to get out of the inning and maintain the 2-0 lead for New Mexico.
UNC had more chances in the seventh to score after Josh Glenn and Garrett Fisher were walked by Connor Dye of UNM, the only two batters he faced. The Bears again were unable to take advantage and left them both on base.
Momentum finally shifted the Bears way in the top of the eighth when Sam Leach hit a double down the right field line to bring home Jake Gitter and Quinn Ayers to tie the ball game at 2-2. New Mexico answered quickly and took momentum back in the bottom of the inning, taking the 3-2 lead with a run from Ediberto Reyes.
Needing to score to stay alive in the top of the ninth, Matt Burkart hit his second double of the game, and advanced to third on a wild pitch to put him in scoring position. Unfortunately for the Bears, the tying run was left stranded and New Mexico stole the close win 3-2.
Game 2
The back half of the double-header saw Dylan Bowers start on the mound for the Bears. Bowers allowed no hits while striking out two batters in the first inning to make the inning scoreless for both teams.
New Mexico opened the scoring for game two in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs to jump out to the 2-0 lead. Harry Fulletron put the Lobos up 4-0 with his two RBI home run in the fifth, and the Lobos added one more to make it 5-0 to end the fourth.
Matt Burkart led the Bears at the plate in game two, going 2-3 and recording his third double of the day, this one coming in the seventh inning for Burkart.
The Lobos completed the defense of their home field with the 9-0 win Sunday night to put the Bears at 2-5 so far this season.
