Game 1 vs Houston Baptist
UNC only needed the first two at-bats to take a 2-0 lead thanks to Jake Gitter hitting a homer to right center and bringing home Hayden Heinze, who had singled at the top of the order for the Bears.
Dylan Bowers got the start on the mound Sunday morning against Houston Baptist, the first of his UNC career. Bowers threw 62 pitches in 3.2 innings. Ashton Mansur would relieve Bowers, allowing no runs and 5 hits on 66 pitches in 4.1 innings. Andrew Willmon took the mound in the bottom of the ninth to finish things off for the Bears, quickly retiring three batters and striking two of them out.
The Bears had a huge sixth inning, pouring in 5 runs off 5 hits to take the lead over the Huskies 8-5 heading into the seventh inning. Billy Moreland and Garrett Fisher were able to add two more runs in the top of the seventh to further increase the lead to 10-5.
To lead off in the ninth, Josh Glenn jacked a homer to left field, giving Matt Burkhart something to follow up for the Bears next at bat. Burkhart hit a homer of his own, also to left field. The back-to-back homers put the Bears up 12-5 and sealed the win for UNC.
Jake Gitter led the Bears in hits, going 3-5 with 3 RBI's as well as scoring two runs. The Bears had three homers in the game; One each from Gitter, Glenn, and Burkhart. Eight Bears logged a hit, with all eight of those having at least one RBI.
The win gives the Bears the sweep over Houston Baptist, going 2-0 over the Huskies this weekend.
Game 2 vs Texas Tech
The #3 Red Raiders were not a friendly host on the field this weekend, taking both games over the Bears.
Sam Wyatt got the start on the mound for the final game of the weekend for the Bears, going 2.2 innings with four strikeouts on 62 pitches. Five other pitchers were utilized for the Bears in the game.
UNC got their first runs on the board with Josh Glenn's home run to bring home Sam Leach and himself and narrow the Red Raiders lead 5-2 in the fourth inning.
Johnny Graham had the second bomb of the game for the Bears, this time to left field to make the score 14-3 in the top of the seventh. The game was ended in the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule.
#3 Texas Tech went 4-0 defending their home field from the Bears and Houston Baptist this weekend.
Head Coach Carl Iwasaki expects his team to benefit from this weekend,
"Overall, good start to the 2020 season with two victories over a Southland conference team. Our players experienced competition against a nationally ranked Big 12 team. We will take this experience into our practices this week and prepare for the next weekend at New Mexico."
Bears Baseball will be back on the road this coming weekend when they head to Albuquerque for a three-game series against the New Mexico Lobos Feb. 21-23. The first game on Friday will be at 3 PM.
