Irvine, Calif. – The Bears soccer team wrapped up their California road trip with a 2-0 loss to the Anteaters of UC Irvine on Sunday night.
The Bears came out firing in the first half with two quick shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. UC Irvine would match the intensity finding the back of the net in the 14th minute to make it 1-0, Anteaters.
UCI kept the pressure on the Bears through the rest of the first half and would score again in the 37th minute to make it 2-0 at halftime. The Anteaters outshot the Bears in the first half 6-3.
"I thought we played pretty well," Head Coach Tim Barrera stated. "Just a couple bad mistakes that led to some goals in the first half, but overall I thought we dealt with them pretty well."
The second half saw just two more shots on goal for the Bears but neither of them hit home as the Bears would fall to UCI by a final score of 2-0. "Irvine is a team that really likes to keep the ball," Barrera said. "There wasn't a lot of opportunities for either team because of their style of play."
Taylor Washington had three saves on the night off of nine shots from UC Irvine. Lexi Pulley had one shot on goal on two shots overall.
Coach Barrera on the California road trip: "We played two good teams that will be at the top of the Big West Conference. Part of the preseason experience is to see how our team can grow and come together and I think the players responded well to the tough travel schedule."
The Bears will stay on the road when they face Grand Canyon University next Thursday, September 5th in Phoenix. Go to UNCBears.com for all game times and information.
