Northern Colorado soccer scored a pair of unanswered goals to defeat Grand Canyon 2-1 on Thursday
PHOENIX – Northern Colorado soccer got a pair of monkeys off its back on Thursday night, ending an over 250 minutes scoring drought and earning their first win of the season. The Bears improved to 1-3-1 on the year thanks to a pair of unanswered goals in a 2-1 victory at Grand Canyon.
The Lopes jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when the Bears failed to clear a corner kick leading to the goal in the 14th minute.
Northern Colorado responded well to the 1-0 deficit by increasing its pressure on GCU. That increased offensive attack lead to the end of a 275 scoreless minutes streak when Taylor Bray found the back of the net in the 31st minute. Kaitlyn Meeder served up a great cross and Bray extended her leg, redirecting the ball into the net.
The teams traded possession during the middle portion of the game until Cara Quinn first goal of the season to break the tie. Quinn's goal came on a failed clear attempt.
UNC's defense held strong the rest of the way to preserve the first win of the season.
Tim's Take
"It was a good overall team win for the Bears. It's always good to get the first win of the season, especially on the road. Grand Canyon came into the game in a similar position as us not having a great start to the year so it was a battle. I am proud of the players definitely after we went down a goal to fight back and tie the game and then get the win. We used our bench a lot tonight and I think that helped us late in the game to get the win."
Stat of the game
The minutes just kept on adding up until Taylor Bray finally found the back of the net for UNC in the 31st minute to end the 275 minutes scoreless streak.
What's ahead
It's a quick turnaround for UNC as they head to Dallas for tomorrow night's game against SMU. The game between the Bears and Mustangs begins at 4:30 pm MT.
Northern Colorado's next home game is set for Sunday, September 8 at Noon when Austin Peay visits Greeley.
