Bears battle to a tie in season opener
8/24/2019 12:10:00 AM | Women's Soccer
GREELEY – The Bears end their home-opening game in a tie verse Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. After a lightning delay, both teams played a fast-paced back and forth game. With no goals scored in the first half of the game, there was a tremendous amount of fouls on both teams. While both teams were battling it out on the field, athletes on their teams are battling for their positions. Substitutions were common throughout the entire game while coaches are still figure out the flow and dynamic of their team with new and returning players.
In the first half the Bears had three shots on goal by Taylor Bray, Lindsi Jennings, and Britney Donais. The hard fighting continued throughout the second half, however in the 52nd minute Southern Illinois scored from a Bears own goal.
Mackenzie Litzsinger received a yellow card in the 58th minute. Ten minutes later Mackenzie Bray received first yellow card for the season. Of the seven attempted shots, star sophomore, Lexi Pulley took four of them. As one of the Bears lead scorers from last season, Pulley has set high expectations for herself and the team this upcoming season.
Taylor Bray, a strong junior, used her speed up from the midfield to gain separation from the defenders resulting in an unassisted goal. Neither team held on long enough to score a game-winning goal resulting in overtime. In the first 10-minute half of OT, only two shots were taken. One by Taylor Bray in hopes of scoring her second goal, and one by the Cougars. By the start of the second 10-minute half of OT, the Bears were on their toes ready to fight for a game-winning goal.
In the process, Junior, Taylor Bray and sophomore, Maddie Duren received yellow cards within a minute of each other. Avery Smith and Lexi Pulley both had shots on goal, but neither of them ended up in the back of the net. While the Cougars only had one unsuccessful shot on goal, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
With lightning delays, stoppage time, and a surprise sprinkler delay in between OT periods, the Bears gained valuable experience in their first game of the season. While it's still the beginning of the year, there is still a lot more work these women want to put in to be the best team they can be in order to meet the expectations of taking first place in the Big Sky Conference this year.
The Bears return to the pitch on Wednesday, August 28 when they head north to face Wyoming at 11 am.
