@BearsSoftball Celebrates Senior Day, Closes Out Home Schedule This Weekend

Valerie Vidal, Jordyn Wiatrak, Kenzie Kudrna, Madi Schmidt and Cheyenne Talmadge will play their final home games against Sacramento State
Northern Colorado softball will host the defending Big Sky champions this weekend, as they Sacramento State in a three game series. It will be a rematch of the 2018 Big Sky Championship after the two teams played what ended up being the championship game.
Along with the important conference implications, Sunday will be the final home game of the season for UNC. Valerie Vidal, Jordyn Wiatrak, Cheyenne Talmadge, Kenzie Kudrna and Madi Schmidt will take the field for the final time in front of the home fans for Senior Day.
Last week, UNC went 2-2, starting out with a 7-5 win on Tuesday over Metro State. Following the win, the Bears were back on the road for a three-game series against Southern Utah. Due to weather, the series was moved from Ceder City, UT to St. George, UT and played at Dixie State's facilities. UNC went 1-2 in the series, dropping games two and three.
Emma Brockmann earned Big Sky Player of the Week honors after catching fire at the plate this past week and during conference play overall. The sophomore had an astounding .600 batting average in four games, with one home run and seven RBIs. Brockmann recorded a .867 slugging percentage and a .625 on base percentage, while scoring five runs. In Big Sky games, Brockmann leads UNC with a .438 batting average and nine RBIs, along with two home runs.
Along with Brockmann, the freshman Bears found their groove at the plate during the four games.
Dani Young had a strong week at the plate, batting .500 with five runs scored and one double, adding one RBI. Young also posted a perfect fielding percentage with 25 putouts and one assist.
Alyssa Huerta batted .400, with four RBIs and hit two doubles, while scoring one run. Katie Simonsgaard batted .364, while knocking in three runs and scoring two. She also drew three walks.
The lineup for UNC showed remarkable growth in its plate discipline, drawing 17 walks, while only striking out seven times this past week.
In the opening game of the series against the Thunderbirds, Vidal earned her eighth win of the season, pitching a complete game with no earned runs. Vidal's win gave her 32 in her career, breaking the record for division I career wins. The previous record was held by Jayme Reddacliff, who finished with 31 in her career. Vidal has pitched 168 innings and recorded 95 strikeouts in her final season at UNC.
This weekend, UNC will test its growth against the reigning Big Sky champs.
Scouting the Hornets
Sacramento State travels to Greeley with a 5-3 record in the Big Sky and 24-18 overall this season. The Hornets swept a pair of games against Saint Mary's on Tuesday evening and split a two-games against Fresno State this past weekend. In their last Big Sky series, Sacramento State swept Montana at home, with two extra inning victories. Nene Alas has been a key factor in the Hornets offense this season, batting .373, while scoring a team-high 34 runs and accounting for 20 RBIs. Alas as also leads the team with nine doubles and 13 stolen bases in 15 opportunities. Savanna Corr has been in control in the circle this season, holding a 2.09 ERA in 157.2 innings pitched, along with a 16-9 record.
Northern Colorado and Sacramento State faced each other in the Big Sky Tournament championship game last season, after weather had forced multiple game cancellations. The Hornets won the championship in a 3-0 victory over the Bears.
Following the Bears
Northern Colorado will open the series against Sacramento State on Friday, April 19th with a doubleheader. First pitch for the game will be at 1 pm MST and the second game is scheduled to start at 3 pm or 30 minutes after game one's completion.
Saturday will be Senior Day, as Vidal, Jordyn Wiatrak, Cheyenne Talmadge, Kenzie Kudrna and Madi Schmidt will be honored before the series finale. The third game in the series will begin at 12 pm.
