Alexis Chapman's 23 point game wasn't enough for UNC women's basketball at Portland State
PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland State came out with a strong shooting first half and kept UNC an arm's length away from them the rest of the way as they defeated Northern Colorado 85-66.
The loss snaps a four-game win streak for the Bears and moves them to 14-7 overall and 9-3 in the Big Sky to be tied with the Vikings for third place.
Portland State shot 50.8 percent for the game and ended the game with four players in double figures scoring.
Alexis Chapman matched her career-high scoring with 23 points to lead all players in the game. She sat the majority of the first half with two fouls as 21 of her 23 points came in the final 20 minutes of the game.
PSU shot 50.0 percent in the first quarter to lead 20-16. Both Alexis Chapman and Savannah Smith picked up two fouls in the quarter, but second chance points helped Bears with nine.
A late 6-0 run at the end of the second quarter allowed the Vikings to extend their lead to 10 points at the half. Micayla Isenbart led the Bears with 11 points in the first half and finished the game with 14.
After playing just six minutes in the first half, Alexis Chapman went off for 12 points in the third quarter of play. The sophomore guard went 5-for-10 from the field and sank a pair of free throws in the 10 minute span. Despite the efforts from Chapman, UNC trailed 60-49 heading to the fourth.
The Vikings put the game away with a 9-0 run early in the fourth to go up by 20.
What they said
Head Coach Jenny Huth
What led to the big offensive day for Portland State?
"They were firing on all cylinders today and we really didn't take anything away from them. They had their way with us."
On Alexis Chapman's big second half
"Alexis was really aggressive and that helped us in the start of the second half. She helped us push the tempo which is what we needed to try and get back in the game."
What the team can take from today's game.
"We have to have pride on defense to start the games otherwise it will cost us like it did today. We need to take away the strengths and tendencies of our opponent in order to win. Overall Portland St outplayed us for 40 minutes today."
