UNC women's basketball outscored Sacramento State 21-9 in the second quarter on its way to a 71-61 win
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Northern Colorado women's basketball outscored Sacramento State 21-9 in the second quarter, including a 16-2 run and holding the Hornets without a field goal for the final 5:01 of the half to earn the 71-61 win Monday night. The Bears move to 10-3 in the conference and 15-7 overall. The 10-3 mark puts them in a tie for second with Idaho State.
Savannah Smith turned in her fifth 30-point game of the season, while Ali Meyer was one short of her career-high in rebounds grabbing 16. Micayla Isenbart joined Smith in double figures with 14 points for the second straight game, while Alexis Chapman and Krystal Leger-Walker just missed out with nine points each.
Sacramento State held the early lead during the first quarter until UNC went on a 12-2 run near the end of it. The run included scoring seven points in a minute span.
Leading 20-19, the Bears went on an 11-0 run as Sacramento State went scoreless for almost four minutes. The run extended to 16-2, putting Northern Colorado up by as much as 15. UNC clamped down on defense as they held Sacramento State without a field goal for the final 5:01 of the half and led by that margin of 15 at the break.
Savannah Smith led all scorers with 17 points in the first half, while Micayla Isenbart scored nine and Krystal Leger-Walker added in seven.
UNC extended the lead to as much as 22 with a 13-5 run early in the third quarter. The Bears led by 15 at the end of it, shooting 50.0 percent from the field.
With the game in hand, the Bears played out the game during the final quarter of play.

- UNC ended the game with 18 offensive rebounds leading to 17 second chance points, while the Hornets had 10 o-boards for just two second chance points.
- Micayla Isenbart tied her career-high in rebounds with seven.
What's ahead
UNC is in the middle of a four games in eight days stretch. The team now returns home on Thursday night to host Eastern Washington at 7 pm.
