Northern Colorado dropped its road game against DU Wednesday night
DENVER, Colo.- Northern Colorado faced Denver on Wednesday night, coming up short 74-55 against the Pioneers.
"I thought [Denver] came into the game with more hunger than we did to start the game," head coach Jenny Huth said. "We got down and we couldn't turn the corner. Honestly, I was looking for who would play well together and we just never settled in to a lineup I liked. Credit to DU and they came in and focused on our plays and what to take away. They executed their game plan well."
Alexis Chapman led the Bears with 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting.
DU had three players in double-figures, led by Lauren Loven's game-high 19.
UNC struggled from three-point range, going 2-of-20. Micayla Isenbart recorded the Bears' two made shots on six attempts.
DU took advantage of UNC's mistakes, scoring 25 points off 22 turnovers. The Pioneers had 18 of their own turnovers, but the Bears only scored nine points off them.
In the first quarter, DU built an eight-point lead, shooting 43.8 percent from the floor. UNC was limited to a 28.6-percent and could not get its rhythm going on offense. After the first, the Pioneers had a 18-10 lead on the Bears.
The second quarter did not fair much better for the Bears, as the team scored nine points on 4-of-16 shooting. The Bears went into halftime with a 31-19 deficit.
UNC's offense picked up in the third quarter, as the team scored 16 points on 6-of-18 shooting. Chapman scored four of her points in the quarter. DU's offense was also more effective, scoring 20 points and shooting 53.3 percent. UNC was down 52-35 heading to the final quarter.
The Bears again were more effective in the fourth quarter, shooting 35 percent. Chapman scored seven points, giving her 11 for the second half of the game. UNC went on a 10-0 run with 2:35 left in the game to force a timeout from the Pioneers. The late rally had scared DU but came up short in reclaiming the lead. The Pioneers won the game 74-55.
"The fact that were still finishing plays and continue to grow and improve when were down is a good sign," Huth added. "Our kids care, but we have to learn when to care at the right times and right ways, together. I'm proud we kept fighting and put our press on that seemed to rattle them. Going back and looking at what that could do for us in the future is advantageous."
