Deaton's Clutch Shot Pushes Bears Past Cowgirls

Northern Colorado defeated Wyoming in a defensive battle on Sunday afternoon
LARAMIE, Wyo.- Northern Colorado women's basketball showed its toughness on Sunday afternoon, grinding out a 46-44 win over the Wyoming Cowgirls. True freshman Kadie Deaton delivered the game-winning jumper with two seconds left on the clock to give UNC the road victory.
The improvement on defense was the story of the game for the Bears, as they held Wyoming to a 29.5 shooting percentage. UNC also held the Cowgirls to 15 percent from behind the arc.
UNC had three players in double figures, led by Alisha Davis and her game high 14 points, on 7-of-15 shooting. Deaton finished with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including the team's final seven points. Alexis Chapman added 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting.
For the game, UNC had a 34.5 shooting percentage.
The Cowgirls jumped out to a 9-2 lead midway through the first quarter and extended the lead out to 11-4. UNC would re-group and closed the quarter with four straight points to trail 13-8 after one. The Bears were held to 25 percent from the floor in the opening quarter, while Wyoming held a 37.5 percentage.
In the second quarter, UNC scored the first four points of the quarter, pulling within one of the Cowgirls at 13-12. Deaton came off the bench and accounted for four of the team's points during the 8-0 run. The Bears would tie the game at 15 on an Ali Meyer free-throw. Wyoming responded with a 7-2 run to hold the 22-17 advantage over UNC. The Bears went into half trailing by three at 22-19.
UNC would take control in the third quarter, shooting 47.1 percent and outscoring the Cowgirls 18-11. Chapman scored six points in the quarter, with Davis adding another six to power UNC to take the lead. The Bears raced ahead of Wyoming 37-32 in the game.
Moving to the fourth, UNC held the five-point lead, but the Cowgirls came out firing in the final quarter. Wyoming would tie the game at 39 with a 6-0 run after UNC scored the first basket of the game. The two teams went into a scoring drought, going three-and-a-half minutes with no points. The Cowgirls broke the drought with a jumper from Tereza Vitulova. Deaton would get UNC to within one with a free-throw on the Bears' next possession. Deaton would then give UNC the lead with three minutes left in the game, knocking down the jumper for a 42-41 advantage. The Bears built a three-point lead with another Deaton jumper to lead 44-41. The Cowgirls tied the game up at 44 with a three-pointer from Alba Ramos Sanchez with 17 seconds left in the game. UNC had possession and Deaton came up clutch again with a turnaround jumper with two seconds left of give the Bears the lead. Davis had three of her five blocks in the fourth quarter to protect the rim.

- Northern Colorado finished with nine team blocks against Wyoming. Alisha Davis matched her career-high with five in her first career start for the Bears. The five blocks are tied for the third most in program history or a single game. Davis also nearly had her third career double-double, finishing with nine rebounds to go along with her 14 points.
- Micayla Isenbart recorded a career-high with 13 rebounds. Her previous high was nine against Southern Utah back in March of this year.
- Alexis Chapman recorded her sixth double-digit scoring game of the season. She has 29 career games with double-digit points.
- Kadie Deaton had her sixth game of double-digit points as a freshman.
- UNC's bench outscored Wyoming's 16 to 10 on Sunday. The Bears' bench has outscored its opponents in eight of the team's nine games this season.
