Northern Colorado scored from all parts of the floor on Wednesday afternoon
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- Northern Colorado women's basketball started Thanksgiving week off right as they defeated Chattanooga 59-42 on Wednesday afternoon. UNC pulled away from the Mocs in the fourth quarter, outscoring them 18-7 to secure the win.
"I'm proud of us coming in focused for a quick turnaround from the west coast," head coach Jenny Huth said. "Overall, we are learning each other better, but still have a long way to go in our overall execution and decisions. We will continue breaking things down and growing. Our team is learning how to finish in the games we've won. Early on, we had a chance to open-up games and didn't capitalize. We have talked about [finishing], but it comes down to discipline and focus together."
The Bears came up big on the glass, pulling down 15 offensive rebounds that they turned into 11 second-chance points. UNC out-rebound Chattanooga 48 to 34 on the day. Alisha Davis posted a match and career-high, 11 rebounds, including four offensive. Davis picked up her second career double-double after scoring 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting and going 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.
UNC took advantage at line, converting 14-of-17 free-throws in the game. Kadie Deaton continued to lead the way for UNC, going a perfect 8-of-8. Deaton matched Davis with 14 points.
Chattanooga jumped out on the Bears to start the game, leading 15-12 after the first period. UNC struggled from the floor, shooting 18.8 percent in the quarter. Deaton was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line to keep UNC in the game.
In the second quarter, the Bears found their stroke from behind the arc, going 4-of-7 from three-point range. Alexis Chapman and Micayla Isenbart both hit two, three-pointers and UNC pulled ahead of the Mocs, 28-23 at the half.
"Micayla has tons of experience and works her tail off," Huth added. "She plays within herself and is a team-first kid. It helps us steady us when she plays like she id today. She hits the three and know who needs the ball."
Both teams had difficulty scoring to start the third quarter, but the scoring picked up in the last three minutes. After Chattanooga tied the game at 33, Bridget Hintz scored a key layup to put UNC back in front. Deaton scored the next six points in the game, followed by a Mocs' layup near the end of the quarter. UNC would head to the fourth with 41-35 advantage.
The Bears picked up the offense in the final quarter, shooting 58.3 percent from the floor. Davis was key for UNC, scoring seven of her 14 points in the quarter, shooting 2-of-3 and making three, free-throws. With the strong shooting in the quarter, the Bears closed out Chattanooga 59-42.
UNC improved to 3-4 on the season.
