UNC earns first win of the season
DALLAS, TEXAS – It was a game of runs in the Saturday matinee matchup between the UNC Bears and SMU Mustangs. Northern Colorado outlasted Southern Methodist to come away with the first win of the season 61-52.
"We spaced the floor better and kept the game as simple as we could," head coach Jenny Huth said. "I thought we found a little bit of a grove on offense in spurts and then we played passing lanes really well in our zone. Lex is a great player for us and just settled into the game by being more patient."
Both teams started slow out of the gates, with both teams combining to go 4-28 from the field in the first quarter. UNC committing 7 turnovers and 8 personal fouls also contributed to a rough first quarter for the Bears.
The first five minutes of the second quarter was much of the same story for UNC, and found themselves down 21-6 at the media timeout. However, with 4:34 left in the half, the Bears would go on a run and never look back.
UNC ended the half on a 14-3 run and cut the SMU lead to just four, thanks in large part to the Bears defense forcing 9 turnovers and a 10 point contribution from Alexis Chapman.
The momentum remained in the Bears favor in the third quarter, with UNC out-scoring the Mustangs 24-12 in the quarter. The Bears were 3-3 from 3-point range and 7-9 from the free throw line in the quarter.
Another big 16-3 run by the Bears in the last five minutes of the quarter allowed them to jump out to a 8 point lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Bears stayed steady and held on to their lead throughout the fourth quarter by hitting all 7 of their free throws to seal the win over the Mustangs.
Chapman was the leading scorer for the Bears with 20 points, including 4 3-pointers.
Bridget Hintz showed her dominance in the paint with 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Kadie Deaton led the Bears in assists with 7, as well as contributing 3 steals.
Alisha Davis played a big role in the third quarter run for the Bears, finishing the game with 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Northern Colorado limited SMU to just 1-12 beyond the 3-point arc.
"We are happy to get a solid road win and hoping we can keep learning and growing," Huth added. "Micayla helped us with her steady play, so it was nice ot have her back."
Micayla Isenbart made her season debut on Saturday, playing 21 minutes and recording four rebounds and four steals, while scoring two points.
