Northern Colorado was not able to match the Cardinal 's inside production
STANFORD, Calif.- Northern Colorado women's basketball saw first-hand why Stanford is one of the top teams in the nation. UNC fell to the No. 3 team in the nation at Maple Pavilion, 90-36, on Thursday night.
"They are a great team," head coach Jenny Huth said. "They play hard, fast and share the ball well. It was hard for us to get open shots and defend them one-on-one, unquestionably. Overall, our job is to learn and grow each day and each game. We will look at how we can execute better together and grow from the opportunity!"
The Bears had difficulty all night hitting shots against Stanford. They shot 22% from the field(11-51) and 18% from three-point range(3-16). The Cardinal finished 37-of-68 from the field for a 54% shooting percentage. Stanford was also four-of-11 from three. Lacie Hull had a game-high, 19 points on eight-of-11 shooting.
Stanford controlled the paint against UNC, scoring 58 points to the Bears 12 down low.
"Defending them at each position is difficult based on size, speed, athleticism, but I am proud of the effort from our team," Huth added.
Jasmine Gayles was the Bears' high-scorer, finishing with eight points on two-of-eight shooting. Gayles converted three-of-four free throws in the game as well.
Turnovers were also in issue for UNC, as the team had 19 on the night, compared to Stanford's nine.
UNC got its first measure of the Cardinal, falling behind 27-12 after the first period. Bridget Hintz scored four points in the quarter.
Stanford separated further in the second period, outscoring the Bears, 28-7. Kadie Deaton scored five of the teams points in the quarter.
In the third quarter, UNC played better, shooting four-of-12 from the field and two-of-five from behind the arch. Gayles scored five of her eight points in the quarter and Alexis Chapman added three. The Cardinal still had a good average, shooting 57% in the third and scoring 17 points.
It was all Stanford in the fourth quarter, as the Cardinal closed out the game with a 18-3 scoring margin in the final frame.
Alisha Davis had a good game on the boards, grabbing seven rebounds, including four on offense.
"We learned it's not what we do in practice; it's how we do it. So that when a tough game comes, we are prepared," Huth said. "I hope that becomes an intrinsic motivating factor. As a coach, I am trying to learn our best lineups and put them in position to be their best. I'm hoping we can get more consistency along the way on both sides of the ball."
