Northern Colorado lost the rubber match against the Bengals in a walk-off single
GREELEY, Colo.- It was a tough result for Northern Colorado softball as they fell 1-0 to Idaho State in dramatic fashion. UNC (23-20) lost its first Big Sky series of the season after the Bengals managed to win the deciding game on Saturday afternoon.
Valerie Vidal faced off against Ashlyn Ames in a rematch of the first game of series from Friday afternoon. The two pitchers did not disappoint, with both showing dominating command and control of the opponents lineup.
UNC loaded the bases in the top of the second with two hits and an Idaho State error. The Bears were unable to push any runs across in the inning to keep the score tied at zero.
Idaho State would leave a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the second against Vidal. In the top of the third, Kaley Garcia and Lauren Paige both walked with two outs, but UNC could not come up with the clutch hit to bring them home.
The Bears again had an opportunity in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of baserunners after Mady Young singled and Rachel Johnson walked. Ames was able to keep the UNC lineup in check and escaped the inning without damage. The top of the fifth started promising for the Bears when Madi Schmidt lead off the inning with a single, but nothing else came of the inning for UNC.
Now in the top of the sixth inning and still no score for either team, UNC put one runner on with a single from Young. The Bears again were unable to string enough hits together to bring in a runner.
UNC went down in order in the top of the seventh and the game moved to the bottom of the seventh with Idaho State having a chance to end the game with a single run.
A UNC error allowed Kelsey Breer to reach base and she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Shaynac Dahlen. With a runner in scoring position, Genesis Zamora stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI single to left field that scored Breer and gave Idaho State the 1-0 walk-off victory.
Vidal suffered the loss after going 6.1 innings, allowing one unearned run, on five hits, striking out five, and walking two.
In their words
Shana Easley, Head Coach
"That loss stings because I think we consistently outplayed our opponent today. I lost count of how many hard hit balls we hit right at their fielders. Val threw a great game and kept us in the ball game for 7 innings. To lose on an obstruction call in the bottom of the 7tgh inning hurts because our defense did exactly what they needed to get the out at home and there wasn't anything we could have done differently. At the end of the day, we know overall we played very well and we have confidence in that going into next week."
