GREELEY, Colo – The University of Northern Colorado will take a trip to the Pacific Northwest region this week to take on Seattle University on Thursday and Portland State on Sunday. The Bears are coming off a five-match homestand. They went 1-4 over the five-match stretch.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bears played a pair of matches in Greeley last weekend. On March 2, they fell to Big Sky foe Eastern Washington 7-0. Mana Koitabashi mustered one set win at No. 6 singles against the Eagles' Rachel Swindell but the Bears were swept in doubles.
Two days later, UNC showed a strong effort against Nebraska, Omaha but came up just short 4-3. No. 1 Raffa Mora played well against UNO's Michelle Lo but lost 6-1, 6-7(0), 6-0. In doubles, Tristen Bryant-Otake and Raffa Mora prevailed over Michelle Lo and Janelle Wilson 6-4, but the Mavericks won at No. 2 and No. 3 and it proved to be just enough to be the separation in the final score.
NO. 2 PLAYING LIKE NO. 1
Tristen Bryant-Otake is in her first season with the Bears but has already been proving why she could be a force to be reckoned with in the future. At No. 2 singles, she has four wins, more than anyone else on the team and is 3-4 overall at that position. In perhaps her best match this season, Bryant-Otake bested Sacramento State's Sofi Wicker in come from behind fashion, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. She was also the only Bear to notch a win in that match against the Hornets.
FOR THE BEARS
As a team, the Bears have struggled in singles competition. They hold a 16-32 record so far against all opponents. Results have been better however in doubles. No. 1 pair, Raffa Mora and Tristen Bryant-Otake are currently 4-3 and have played together in every match this spring. Head coach Brenda Gallegos has mixed up the No. 2 and No. 3 positions but lately has been pairing Sarina Chhabra and Madeline Doherty at No. 2. The duo is 1-3 in the spot and the team is 10-13 in doubles overall.
SCOUTING SEATTLE UNIVERSITY (4-8, 0-0 WAC Conf.)
Seattle University has had mixed results this spring but is coming off a close match, which they won 4-3 against North Dakota at home. The win snapped a two-game losing skid and the Redhawks came out with a strong effort in doubles to win at No. 1 and No. 3. In singles, Michelle Lui was successful at No. 1 in straight sets. Lui, a senior from Bellevue, Wash. is 5-7 in singles this year. Her biggest victories have been against Gonzaga, Pacific, and Cal Poly.
The Redhawks are 51-61 as a team in singles and 26-32 in doubles. They have an experienced roster, which consists of five seniors, one junior, one sophomore, and two freshmen. Adam Reeb is in his third years as head coach of both the women's and men's tennis programs at Seattle University.
Last time the Bears played Seattle University was Feb. 2014. Seattle won the contest 4-3 in Colorado Springs. No current Bears played on the team at that time but now Asst. Coach Marissa Baca was victorious against the Redhawks in singles and doubles play four years ago.
SCOUTING PORTLAND STATE (0-9, 0-5 Big Sky)
The Vikings are still searching for their first win of the season but have come close on a couple of occasions. On Feb. 24, they lost 4-3 to Idaho State. Then last weekend, they lost 4-3 to North Dakota in Vancouver, Wash. As a team, Portland State is 32-72 in singles, while they have gone 13-31 in doubles. Three different players have found themselves at No. 1 singles this spring, but Alli Valk has been the most consistent pick. She has gone 0-6 in the spot. The Vikings are still looking for chemistry in doubles and have used ten different combinations this year. Siena Peri and Eszter Zador are the only duo with a winning record. They are currently 2-1 at No. 1.
Like the Bears, Portland State features a young roster, which includes one senior, two juniors, three sophomores, and one freshman. Soph. Brianna Thompson is listed as the team captain. Head Coach Jay Sterling is in his 9th season with the program and the Vikings last made the Big Sky tournament in 2013-14.
Last year, the Bears narrowly beat the Vikings 4-3 in Greeley. In that match, Anna Battersby was a winner in straight sets at No. 1 and Raffa Mora won a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles. Most of Northern Colorado's roster will be playing Portland State for the first time.
