Sarina Chhabra clinches 4-3 win over Portland State on Sunday
PORTLAND Ore. -The Bears lost to Seattle University on Thursday 6-1 but rebounded to beat Portland State 4-3 on Monday to split their weekend road trip.
PORTLAND ST. BOX SCORE
In Seattle, the Bears won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Raffa Mora and Tristen Bryant-Otake teamed to defeat Kelli Woodman and Michelle Lui 6-2. Madeline Doherty and Sarina Chhabra then beat Kyra Jung and Hannah Gianan 6-1 to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, Seattle succesfully held off the Bears in all six singles matches, despite a pair of three set affairs that went the distance at No. 2 and No. 4.
"The girls had a great start in doubles play today against Seattle," said Bears assistant coach Marissa Baca after the match. "We came out strong and took care of business in order to win an important doubles match. Unfortunately, the singles didn't go our way, but the girls are making steps in the right direction. This match was a great way for the girls to get in more match play and adjust to playing at sea level before our first conference match on the road Sunday."
The Bears stayed in the Pacific Northwest to play Portland State on Sunday and edged out the Vikings 4-3. Portland State had a 1-0 lead after doubles with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 but Northern Colorado came back to take four of six singles spots to steal away the win.
"Today's win against Portland State was a turning point for us in the season," said Baca. "Our girls really had to dig deep and fight hard to get the win. Regardless of the outcome of each individual match, the team played with a lot of fight and heart that resulted in the overall result we wanted.
In singles, Carrigan Blanchard won by default at No. 6 to tie it at 1-1, then Mana Koitabashi earned a straight set win at No. 5 over Ashley Knecht 6-0, 6-3 to give the Bears their first lead. After Madeline Doherty won against Gerda Upeniece at No. 3, Sarina Chhabra gave the Bears the winning point with her win over Taylor Rees in come from behind fashion 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1.
"Sarina played especially well today," said Baca. "We were impressed with how she turned the match around after losing the first set. She really got determined and made it her mission to clinch the win for us."
The Bears (3-7, 1-3 Big Sky) return home for a pair of matches next. They will play Colorado Mesa on March 22 at 2:30 p.m. followed by Weber State on March 24 at 10:00 a.m. If weather cooperates, both matches will be outside at UNC campus tennis courts.
"It is going to be important to use the win (over Portland State) as momentum for our upcoming matches because we are really going to need conference wins down the stretch."
