BOX SCORE (PDF)
Greeley, Colo – For the final time in 2017, Northern Colorado and Colorado State clashed on the softball diamond. Three errors in the game gave way to the Rams, as they took the contest, 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colorado State eyed at jumping out to a hot start. Hale Hutton thought for a moment that her team might do it when she led the inning off with a single and eventually made her way around to third base. A stingy Northern Colorado defense kept her 60 feet from scoring, coming up with three big outs to end the inning.
With no action in the bottom half of the opening inning, the Rams again earned a base runner in the second, this time off an error. Though her run would've been unearned, the Bears didn't even bother with those kind of statistics, stranding the runner at second after an impressive catch from Rachel Johnson at first base.
Jordyn Wiatrak kicked off the bottom of the second inning UNC's first hit of the afternoon, singling up the middle. Cheyenne Talmadge, standing on second after her 13th stolen base in 2017, was waved around third off a Lauren Paige double that would have made its way out of the ballpark had the wind not been blowing in from right field.
Now pitching with a lead, Jayme Reddacliff settled into a rhythm. The senior gave up only one hit between the third and fifth innings.
Meanwhile, leftfield Kenzie Kudrna was downright dynamite defensively.
Only once was CSU able to lift a ball over her head throughout the afternoon. Even with a whipping wind blowing in from the south, Kudrna tracked down a game-high seven balls, including two in foul territory that weren't your average putouts. A normally ground-ball heavy defense squad, Kudrna gave first baseman, Rachel Johnson, a run for her money for most putouts.
The Bears held Colorado State scoreless for five consecutive innings, their longest such streak this season. A lead-off triple in the sixth, however, spelled trouble for UNC's slim lead. A fielding error from Jayme Reddacliff inevitably brought in two runs and suddenly, the Rams had captured the lead, 2-1.
In the seventh with Valerie Vidal in to pitch, Colorado State grabbed an insurance run off Northern Colorado's third error of the game. With three outs remaining, CSU held a 3-1 advantage.
Rachel Johnson led the final frame off with a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate. The Rams were able to string together three straight outs, though, clinching their fourth victory over the Bears, 3-1.
KEY STAT
Strikeouts – Northern Colorado struck out eight times, compared to CSU's one.
MOST VALUABLE BEAR
Kenzie Kudrna – The left fielder recorded a season and game-high seven putouts, including some stellar catches in foul territory.
IN THEIR WORDS
Shana Easley, Head Coach
"I thought our pitchers did well enough to keep us in the game and give us a chance to win. We just weren't able to execute defensively when they put pressure on us, which is a little uncharacteristic of this team. We just weren't able to adjust quick enough to the tendencies we were seeing from their pitcher."
Lauren Paige, Designated Player
"Their pitcher had been working outside with some off-speed pitches. I was just thinking about letting something out there get deep and taking it that way."
"Playing a team like Colorado State is a great challenge. It can give us confidence that we can compete with anyone. Our conference is still a tough conference and we need to bring our 'A' game every single time we play."
NOTABLES
-Lauren Paige recorded UNC's only RBI on a double of the right field wall.
-Jayme Reddacliff again pitched well against CSU, giving up only one earned run in 6.1 innings pitched.
-Northern Colorado stranded seven Colorado State runners on the afternnon.
-Cheyenne Talmadge remains perfect in stolen bases in 2017, grabbing her 13th of the season.
UP NEXT
Shana Easley and the Bears remain at home for a Big Sky Conference series against North Dakota. First pitch of game one is slated for Friday at 1PM.
