Madeline Burdick Wins Defensive Player of the Week
GREELEY, Colo. -The regular season comes to a conclusion for the Bears women's soccer team Friday night with a road match against North Dakota at 12:00pm in Grand Forks, N.D. Northern Colorado defeated North Dakota 2-0 last season, but the Fighting Hawks have made vast improvements to their lineup that finished last in the Big Sky Conference in 2016. Although the Bears already clinched their spot in the conference tournament with their victory over Portland State last weekend, there will be plenty to play for against UND. With a win and a Montana loss or tie, the Bears can clinch the No. 2 seed. With a loss, they could fall as far as the No. 4 seed.
Â
Brick Wall Burdick: Senior Goalkeeper Madeline Burdick denied all 14 shots on goal last weekend against Montana and Portland State and was named the Big Sky Conference defensive player of the week. Burdick also recorded her eighth shutout of the fall on Sunday, setting a new school record. In addition, her eight clean sheets ranks tied for 18th in all of NCAA Division I. Statistically, Burdick has been solid in a variety of categories in her senior season. She is currently ranked 2nd in the Big Sky in save percentage (.860), 2nd in total saves (92), and 4th in goals against average (0.81).
Â
Northern Colorado (11-6-1, 5-3-1 Conf.): Mariel Gutierrez scored both goals in the Bears 2-0 win against Portland State Sunday. She leads the team in goals (8), assists (6), and points (22). Forward Brooke Braden has recorded five goals and five assists on a team leading 48 shot attempts and Maddie Roberts is not far behind with three goals and six assists on 24 shot attempts. On defense, seniors Erica Estes and Isabella Beal have been a model of consistency. Estes has played 1430 minutes and Beal has played 1186.
Â

Â
Scouting North Dakota (6-8-3, 4-5-0 Conf.): The Fighting Hawks won just a single conference match last season but have been considerably more successful this fall. They have conference wins over Portland State, Southern Utah, Weber State, and Idaho State. They also nearly upset undefeated Eastern Washington, losing in overtime 2-1 at home. Last weekend, North Dakota defeated Portland State 1-0 before they fell on Sunday to Montana 2-1. They are strong defensively and have held opponents to 0.94 goals per game. Catherine Klein has started 14 games in goal and holds a .873 save percentage. She also has five shutouts. Offensively, the Fighting Hawks are led by Katie Moller. The junior forward scored three goals in 2016 and followed it with 10 this fall to go along with 23 points. No one else for North Dakota has scored more than two goals.
Â
Big Sky Bound: Having made the Big Sky Conference Tournament for the fifth straight season, the Bears will travel to Cheney, Washington on November 1st to start the playoffs. Eastern Washington has clinched the regular season championship and will host the event. Last season, Northern Colorado fell in the first round the Northern Arizona 2-1 after beating the Lumberjacks in the regular season 3-0.
