Goalkeeper Dual Ends in 0-0 Tie
BOX SCORE GRAND FORKS, N.D. -In their final regular season match before the Big Sky Tournament, the Bears came to a 0-0 overtime draw against North Dakota at Bronson Field Friday afternoon. Brooke Braden led all players in shot attempts (13) and shots on goal (9) and goalkeeper Madeline Burdick made eleven saves and recorded her ninth shutout, further separating herself from the previous school record.
"It was a good effort by the team but we came out a little flat in the first half," said head coach Tim Barrera. "North Dakota had a lot of numbers behind the ball and we just didn't create enough. I thought we were much better in the second half and we created a lot of opportunities. But credit to their goalkeeper, she made some great saves and Madeline Burdick had to make a lot of saves as well to keep us in the game. It was tough conditions today, with 20 mile per hour winds and the wind chill in the teens but both teams fought it out with a lot on the line so it was a good effort by both and we're looking forward to competing the conference tournament."
How It Happened: Northern Colorado maintained possession for most of the first half and after the first forty five minutes, the shots were 7-1 in favor of the Bears. In the second half, North Dakota was much stronger offensively, putting 10 shots on goal. Brooke Braden and Anika Shelrud were the only position players to play all 110 minutes for the Bears. North Dakota goalkeeper Catherine Klein tied the UND single-game record with 18 saves in the match.
Â
With the win Northern Colorado improves to 11-6-2, (5-3-2 Big Sky) while North Dakota falls to 6-8-4 (4-5-1 Big Sky). The Bears were also without the services of their top-goal scorer Mariel Gutierrez, who will be available for the Big Sky Tournament.
Â
Up Next: The Big Sky Tournament will take place November 1-4 and will be held in Cheney, Wash. Eastern Washington (14-4-1, 8-0-1 Big Sky) had the best conference record in the regular season and will host the event. Northern Colorado has made the tournament each of the last five years. In 2016, the Bears fell in round 1 to Northern Arizona 2-1. The Bears will play North Dakota in the first round as the No. 3 seed if there is a winner in the Sacramento/NAU game and if Idaho loses.
