GREELEY, Colo. The University of Northern Colorado Soccer team has been awarded the Team Academic Award from the NSCAA for 2017. The Bears are one of only six teams in the league being recognized with this prestigious honor and it is the 13th time in program history the team has received this recognition, the first in four seasons.
Â
Â
For a team to be considered for the NSCAA Team Academic Award, it must have a composite team grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for all team members who appear on the official NCAA, NAIA or junior college roster forms for the fall season. In addition, all players on the roster must be included in the calculation of the team GPA.
Â
Â
The award reflects a full team commitment to their work in the classroom while they are student-athletes on the soccer team.
Â
Â
What's Next: The Bears will play Big Sky opponent Southern Utah on Friday, October 13th at 4:00pm, their only match of the weekend. The match will take place at Thunderbird Park Complex in Cedar City, Utah.
Â
Â
Last Time Out: Northern Colorado split a two-match weekend set for the third straight time to bring their Big Sky record to 3-3. On Friday at Jackson Stadium, they defeated Idaho 1-0. Kaitlyn Meeder scored her first goal of the season and goalkeeper Madeline Burdick made six saves to earn the shutout. On Sunday, the Bears welcomed last season's Big Sky Champions, the Eastern Washington Eagles and were shutout 2-0. The Bears kept the Eagles contained in the first half, allowing just three shots on goal, but eventually, Saige Lyons was able to beat Burdick with a shot in the 69th minute to give the Eagles their first goal.
Â
Â
Scouting Southern Utah (4-10, 3-3 Big Sky): The Thunderbirds struggled early in the fall in non-conference play but rebounded to defeat Idaho, Idaho State, and Weber State in the Big Sky. Last weekend, the Eagles grabbed a pair of 2-1 victories, the scoring led by Jr. Mackenzie Lawrence, who has five goals on twenty-two shots attempted this season. The Thunderbirds average 1.07 goals per game while their opponents average 2.86. Head Coach Fred Thompson is in his second year after being named to the position in December of 2016.
