The Bears dropped the first two games of the series on Friday falling to the Wildcats 11-1 and 7-2.
OGDEN, Utah. – Strong pitching by Weber State (20-12, 4-1 Big Sky) held Northern Colorado (4-23, 0-5 Big Sky) to just six hits total in Friday's doubleheader. The Bears fell to the Wildcats 11-1 (5) and 7-2.
Game 1:
Weber State used two big innings to put the stamp on game one. The Wildcats scored 10 runs combined in the third and fourth innings to run rule the Bears 11-1.
UNC was held to just three hits and one run in the first half of the twin bill. The team's only RBI came from third baseman, Jordyn Wiatrak.
Wiatrak singled to center field in the fifth pushing across Kenzie Kudrna who pinch ran for Rachel Johnson. Johnson reached on a walk to begin the inning.
The Bears weren't able to keep the rally going, stranding runners on the corners to end the game early.
The other two hits for the team came from Ari Samaniego and Sarah Fitzherbert.
Jayme Reddacliff (4-10) took the loss for the team giving up seven runs, but only two earned on six hits. Reddacliff threw 2.2 innings before being relieved by Valerie Vidal.
Vidal gave up four runs on four hits in her 1.1 IP.
Game Changer:
Two errors on the Bears in the bottom of the fourth opened the door for Weber State. The Wildcats were able to push across six runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Key Stat:
Jordyn Wiatrak was the only player to earn an RBI in the five inning loss. Wiatrak finished 1-2 with an RBI and a strikeout.
In Coach Easley's Words:
"We have got to be better earlier in the game and make adjustments both on offense and defense. It's obviously not the start we wanted to conference and this series specifically, but we have a lot more games to go and we have to keep pushing ourselves to get better."
Game 2:
UNC was once again held to just three hits in the 7-2 loss. The Bears got into a groove in the fifth inning putting up two runs, but were shutout in the final two innings dropping game two of the series.
Weber State put runs on the scoreboard in three of the first four innings using a four-run fourth inning to take a substantial 7-0 lead over Northern Colorado.
The Bears retaliated in the top half of the fifth on a two-out rally. After Adeline Coldiron reached on an error and Kenzie Kudrna earned a walk, UNC had runners on second and first with Madi Schmidt up to bat.
Schmidt came through for the team with a two-RBI single to center, cutting the Wildcats lead to five, 7-2. Sarah Fitzherbert followed suit with a single to left to put runners on the corners. Unfortunately the inning came to end, stranding both Schmidt and Fitzherbert.
The UNC bats were silenced in the final two innings giving Weber State the victory.
Kelli Kleis (0-8) started in the circle for Northern Colorado. Kleis tossed 3.2 innings giving up seven runs (three earned) on seven hits and walked three.
Chandler Elsner relieved Kleis in the bottom of the fourth and finished out the game. Elsner was good for 2.1 IP, giving up just one hit while walking one.
Game Changer:
Three of the four runs that Weber State scored in the fourth were unearned. An error by UNC kept the inning alive for the Wildcats, allowing three more runs to cross including a two-run home run by WSU to push the score to 7-0.
Key Stat:
Madi Schmidt, Sarah Fitzherbert and Lauren Paige were the only Bears to muster a hit in game two. All three went 1-3, but Schmidt pushed across the two runs for the team with a two-RBI single to center.
The softball team will end the series against Weber State on Saturday, April 2. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
