@BearsSoftball Couldn't Protect Late Lead in Loss to Montana
3/26/2016 5:24:00 PM | Softball
The Bears took a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning, but the Griz put up three runs to steal the game 6-4
GREELEY, Colo. – It was the same story just a different day for Northern Colorado (4-21, 0-3 Big Sky). The Bears jumped out to an early lead, but a last inning rally from Montana (12-16, 3-0 Big Sky) left UNC on the wrong end of a 6-4 loss and a series sweep.
Game 3:
The 20 mph wind gusts blowing into Butler-Hancock Softball Field were no problem for Northern Colorado's offense. The Bears were good for three home runs on the day, including two back-to-back.
After giving up two runs in the top of the first UNC answered back with a three-spot in its first chance at bat.
Shortstop Erica Dick got the party started with a two-run long ball to left center to tie the game at two apiece.
The very next at bat designated player Lauren Paige went yard to straight center giving the Bears a 3-2 advantage.
UNC added one more home run in the bottom of the second for good measure. Kaley Garcia sent one over the wall to lead off the inning, providing the team with a two-run cushion, 4-2.
It was zeros across the board for the next two innings until the Griz hit a ground out RBI to cut the lead to one in the fifth.
Both teams went down in order to end the sixth.
Down to its final three outs, Montana kicked off the top of the seventh with a leadoff single to left. Unfortunately a misplayed ball by Madi Schmidt allowed the runner to advance to third putting the tying run just 60 feet away.
Two batters later the tying run touched the plat off a hard hit ball past the third baseman. Montana was good for one more hit to center to push across two more runs to take the lead and eventually the game 6-4.
Jayme Reddacliff (4-9) earned the loss in the series finale. Reddacliff threw all seven innings for the team giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits, striking out one and walking nine.
Northern Colorado falls to 0-6 at home with the loss.
Game Changer:
The Griz hadn't led until the top of the first inning, but used a three-run seventh inning to retake the lead and earn the series sweep over the Bears.
Key Stat:
Three different players hit home runs for UNC. Dick, Paige and Garcia all went deep in the game. Dick now has three home runs on the season, Paige hit her fourth and Garcia now has two long balls on the year, both coming in this series.
In Coach Easley's Words:
"In looking at it I think that I just haven't done a good job in preparing our team to be able to finish when the game is there to be finished. We were in all three ball games this weekend and had the lead late in two of them and just needed to close them out. Our staff and I need to do a better job in preparing them to finish games. I expect our offense to continue into next week and we'll work on pressure situations this week in practice. We're going to continue to push forward and work on defense and hopefully next week at Weber State we'll be able to finish out a game."
The softball team heads back out on the road next weekend with a three-game series in Ogden, Utah against Weber State. The Bears and Wildcats will play a doubleheader on Friday, April 1 and close the series on Saturday, April 2. Game times are set for 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Friday and 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
