Northern Colorado baseball fell in the first game of a four game series against CSUN
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Northern Colorado baseball opened a four game series against CSUN on Friday afternoon in Northridge, falling to the Matadors 5-3.
How It Happened
For the fifth straight game, UNC scored first, this time in the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead on a Brett Minnick home run.
CSUN tied it up in the third and take the lead for good in the next inning, pushing two more runs across to go up 3-1.
In the sixth, CSUN added on a pair of insurance runs on a two-run home run from Jose Ruiz.
The Bears tried to get back in the game scratching across a run in the seventh and then another run in the ninth. UNC got the go ahead run to the plate with runners at the corners, but went down swinging to end the game.
Player of the Game
UNC: Jack Ek had a solid game for the Bears going 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in a run. He also stole a pair of bases as he tried to help the Bears tie the game up.
CSUN: Jose Ruiz had one hit in the game, but it was a big one. His two-run home run in the sixth inning ended up being the game deciding hit. Overall he was 1-for-3 in the game with a walk.
Coach Iwaskaki's Take
Bears are fighting hard and playing well enough to win in the early season. Our opportunities tomorrow is timely hitting with runners in scoring position. Our plan is to come back tomorrow and take game one and go from there to have a chance to win the series.
Stats of the Game
The Bears and Matadors will continue their four game series tomorrow with a double header starting at 12:00 p.m. mountain time. The Bears will send Alex Werbach and Connor Leedholm to the mound in those games.
