Northern Colorado falls to Kansas in a heart breaking ninth inning rally
How It Happened
Northern Colorado led from the third inning on after Cam Huber scored on a three error play that started on a failed pick-off attempt. UNC added on two runs in the fourth, and what was thought to be insurance run in the ninth.
The Jayhawks chipped away at the Bears lead scoring a run in both the seventh and eighth inning, before completing their comeback in the ninth.
KU's comeback started with a leadoff hitter Rudy Karre reaching on an error by Jacob Ek and then a hit batsmen to put runners on first and second. UNC turned to Cody Carroll after that to try and earn his second straight save.
Kansas loaded the bases with a bunt single to the third base side and no outs. After a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4 UNC, KU loaded the bases again when Matt McLaughlin beat out a slow roller to short. The next two batters proceeded to walk and walk-off the Bears.
Player of the Game
UNC: Nick Tanner had an outstanding first outing of the year for Northern Colorado, going seven innings, allowing an unearned run on five hits while striking out five and walking just two. Tanner faced 28 batters during the game, throwing 97 pitches.
KU: Joven Afenir seemed to be the only Jayhawk to do anything at the plate over the whole game for Kansas, going 3-for-4 on the afternoon. He had two singles and a double while scoring a run and driving in another on a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Stats of the Game
- Rob Cashel also had a good game for Northern Colorado going 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in another run.
- Both pitching staffs showed good control over the game combining to walk just six batters.
- Nick Tanner forced Kansas into stranding six runners over his seven innings of work, quickly getting out of any jams the Jayhawks created.
Coach Iwasaki's Take
"Disappointing loss due to not closing out the game with a two run lead in the bottom of the ninth today. However Nick Tanner pitched a tremendous game and gave us a chance for victory vs a Big 12 opponent. He kept them off balance and had command of all pitches for seven innings. Rob Cashel also had a great game at the plate and defensively. We have competed with two top conference teams in the past four days, we need to learn from this loss that we have the talent to close out opponents in the late innings."
What's Next?
Northern Colorado closes out its opening five game stretch on Tuesday when they look to earn a split over the two game series with Kansas. First pitch is once against scheduled for 2:00 p.m. mountain time and on ESPN3.
